THIS SEPTEMBER SHINGLE INN BARISTAS WILL FIGHT FOR THE RIGHT TO CALL THEMSELVES DAVINCI GOURMET AUSTRALIAN COFFEE CHAIN CHAMPIONS – WE SPOKE TO ONE
Name: Alex Groves
Title: Barista and Supervisor at Shingle Inn Garden City in Brisbane
Coffee order: Mocha
Accolades: Shingle Inn National Barista ofthe Year Award 2015
Winning signature drink: a chocolate chilli layered latte, using chilli infused chocolate and espresso.
Inspiration: I recently tasted chocolate chilli for the first time and fell in love with it. So I decided to use those flavours to recreate an all time favourite winter warmer: the mocha.
What else do you like to do in winter?
I try to make the most of the short moments of sunshine, but I also stay inside a lot playing my guitar and drinking lots of coffee.
How long have you been a barista?
I started off casually while I was in year 12 and have been full time at Shingle Inn for about 12 months – so almost 2 years.
Where do you want to be in five years time?
I’d love to own my own café somewhere down the coast or along the water. My favourite time in the café is when we’re under the pump, so it’d be nice to be nearthe beach, but somewhere where it still gets super busy.
What’s your thoughts on Sydney?
I’ve only ever been once and I loved it. I love the city life and like that it’s a bit cooler. Our team has been training together once a week and I’m really looking forward to heading away with them.
I have to rate Melbourne over Sydney, especially because of the coffee down there – it is phenomenal.
And now so, so that the world knows what it is up against, some important information from Alex:
Spaghetti or lasagna?
Waffles or pancakes?
Frittata or quiche?
Any words for the competition:
Watch out because the Shingle Inn is fast, it is efficient, and it is ready to fight!
